| Purpose...Cancer
Diagnosis and Management is a regular feature of the Journal, intended
to assist internists in cancer prevention, detection, management, and monitoring
for recurrences. Articles for this series should focus on the clinical issues
relevant to an internist's daily practice and be concise and easily understood
by a generalist.
Style...We are striving to make the Journal an important part of continuing medical education for internists. Therefore the style of the article should be similar to that of a CME presentation, using a minimum of jargon and highlighting key points and new developments in ways the internist can quickly incorporate into his or her practice. Format...About six Journal pages including tables, figures and references. (About 12 to 15 doubled-spaced, typed pages). Content...Because the Journal is striving to print concise articles, manuscripts for this series should concentrate on one or two clinical issues, rather than trying to survey the range of issues of detection and treatment of a specific disease. For instance, an article on colon cancer might discuss how an internist should monitor a patient who has undergone a successful resection. Although background information is important, discussions of molecular biology and biopsy and surgical techniques should be concise, rather than the detailed discussions aimed at specialists. Special attention should be given to prevention, differential diagnosis, use of diagnostic tests and decision guidelines for hospitalization or referral to specialists. Internists are often consulted by their patients during cancer treatment, so discussions of common side effects of treatment should be included. We encourage using diagnostic and treatment algorithms appropriate for a generalist. Canuto for additional information.
